Rapid Eye Check

The Eyes Don’t Lie! Why is the Rapid Eye Check method effective?

Our eyes have often been called the “windows to the soul” since they most often distinguish our health, emotions, or thoughts at times. The effectiveness of the Rapid Eye Check technique is based on the fact that drugs affect the central nervous system of the body, travel through the bloodstream, and reach the brain within three to five minutes after ingestion. Because the eyes are extremely sensitive and near the brain, they begin to show the effects of drug use within 15-30 minutes, and remain affected for up to three to four days after use. A properly trained supervisor can read the eyes and see the aftermath of drug use. The effectiveness of Rapid Eye Check is enhanced by the fact
that all employees are aware that their supervisors can tell, often with a glance, if they are under the influence of illegal drugs and/or alcohol. This awareness is frequently the greatest deterrent to substance abuse in the workplace.

Who should attend a Rapid Eye Check workshop?

Educating your key staff members to be alert to the physical and behavioral characteristics of frequent substance use should be the first step in your comprehensive substance abuse program. Trained supervisors can use this program 24 hours a day, normally without the subject’s knowledge or awareness of observation.

Government regulations may require that you employ a program such as Rapid Eye Check. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Pat 382 requires that all driver supervisors receive drug and alcohol training to detect for possible usage while on the job. The cited regulation applies to all employers operating commercial vehicles in commerce and who are subject to the CDL requirements of Part 383.
